Allowing the Work to Move Forward
On letting go of the past and allowing an artist to grow
Every artist carries a past.
Early works, formative influences, periods shaped by urgency or survival—none of this is a mistake. It is evidence of becoming. But there comes a point when holding too tightly to what was can quietly limit what is still unfolding.
Growth requires permission.
For many artists—especially those whose work has been shaped by hardship, identity, or inherited expectations—the past can begin to feel like a constraint.
Certain styles are praised. Certain themes are expected. Certain versions of the artist are remembered and reinforced. Over time, what once provided grounding can begin to feel like a narrow frame.
Moving forward does not mean rejection.
It means discernment.
In Puerto Rican art, this tension is deeply familiar. Our artists are often asked to carry memory faithfully—to remain legible, recognizable, rooted.
That responsibility matters. But preservation does not require repetition. Continuity does not require stillness.
“Moving forward is not rejection—it is discernment.”
An artist grows as their life grows.
New seasons bring new questions. Maturity brings restraint. Distance brings clarity. What once needed to be declared with force can now be held with greater quiet. What once depended on intensity can give way to precision. This shift is not loss—it is refinement.
Allowing the work to grow alongside the artist means letting go of the need to remain aligned with a previous version of oneself.
It also requires trust.
Trust that the foundation is strong enough to support change. Trust that those who value integrity will follow the work, even when it surprises them. Trust that legacy is not weakened by evolution, but strengthened by honesty.
There is courage in this transition. Not loud courage, but steady courage. The courage to say: this no longer reflects where I am. The courage to explore without certainty. The courage to release what once worked.
For the artist, this can feel unsettling. The past is known. Growth is not. But stagnation also carries a cost—one that, over time, separates the work from the lived experience that once gave it depth.
