Born in Tras Talleres, Santurce, Puerto Rico, on September 5, 1945, Rafael moved with his family to New York City when he was barely a month old.
Growing up in the streets of El Barrio, his artistic gifts were evident from an early age. His natural talent was recognized by family, teachers, and friends, who encouraged him to pursue a career in the arts.
Inspired by his middle school art teacher, he passed the entrance exam for the High School of Art & Design in New York.
After graduating, Rafael enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served for four years and reached the rank of Sergeant. His service included deployment to Santo Domingo in 1965, followed by the experience of the Vietnam War.
Upon returning, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York and continued refining his craft through advanced studies in anatomy and illustration.
For the next fifteen years, he thrived as an illustrator, graphic designer, and art director, collaborating with advertising agencies and production studios in New York City.
In 1983, driven by his love for his homeland, Rafael returned permanently to Puerto Rico. He continued working in the creative industry until dedicating himself fully to painting.
His work combines the precision of design with expressive creativity, capturing the spirit of Puerto Rican culture through a deeply personal artistic vision.
